Swipe to see the painting I went over - it gives a good starting point of texture & colour to work on but can be tricky to see the current painting until it emerges more…pic no.3 It was contra jour with the boat backlit plus high tide. An accidental viewpoint. I put the bowl on my pale An accidental viewpoint. I put the bowl on my palette whilst I set up my usual still life table but then I looked down and it grabbed me! The pattern and lemons looked so good from above, they glowed! Was unsure about painting a round bowl but I didn’t worry about it being perfect. I finished the painting & decided I didn’t like th I finished the painting & decided I didn’t like the two main flowers in the front! So I wiped them & rearranged the still life and painted again. In my haste I forgot to video 🙄that bit. But hope you still enjoy it… (Spot the difference at the end!) Continuing with my Abbey Slip project. This is one Continuing with my Abbey Slip project. This is one of the biggest, most complex plein airs I’ve done and I’m pleased with it! Dusk- a tricky time of day as I only had a 90 mins window to paint, before it got too dark to see the subject! I wanted the amazing old atmosphere of the place. It had helped that I’d made several paintings and drawings of Abbey Slip before this one which enabled me to focus on the brush work and colour as I’d learnt the subject. I painted it over 4 consecutive days to keep the tide high and the moon lit! With a cold north wind blowing for the first time With a cold north wind blowing for the first time it felt like autumn brrr! Tricky perspective but a nice line up of boats and shapes. Early morning light just hitting the side of the hull. I’m lucky to be able to walk to this subject from our house in Newlyn, it’s the old harbour. A new project that felt out of my comfort but actu A new project that felt out of my comfort but actually I’m really enjoying it! It’s of the old Abbey Slip in Penzance. I’ve sketched, made a mini painting and now a larger painting - learning the subject. Choosing my favourite times of the day - this is around midday when the sun is behind the buildings making it contra jour. I’ve really enjoyed studying something and keep going back. I did 4 sessions of plein air on this painting with a two hour window to do it. 1860’s country home, I painted this for my husband 1860’s country home, I painted this for my husband Mr B, it’s where he grew up & his Mum & Dad lived for 60 years of their marriage. It’s nice to be able to capture a place of happy memories in a painting! I scaled up one of my favourite paintings of this I scaled up one of my favourite paintings of this past year. Quite a challenge to replicate the brushwork and colours! The smaller plein air was a fleeting impression, capturing a sunrise moment. And then to get the same effect in the studio…It was a good learning taking it apart to replicate it - so many colour mixes, see my palette. It’s not an exact copy, hoping for the essence and it being a bigger size to have an impact. Love this boat, a wonderful shape and reflections. Especially moody with the lights still on. Also caught the Scilly isles passengers waiting for the Scillonian III. So I turned the painting to the wall in the studio but with time & fresh eyes it was worth finishing & posting on here! It’s funny how you can’t see it when outside painting. Swipe for the whole painting. It’s the Sea Salts S Swipe for the whole painting. It’s the Sea Salts Sail festival in Mousehole, early morning before all the boats leave for the Sunday Parade. The water was still with beautiful reflections. It was one of those special plein air paints. Also the BBC Tv crew came and interviewed me whilst I was painting - with no time to prepare what I was going to say! See last video for the short interview. I’m on an excellent workshop with @jillcarverpaintings & @workshopsinyorkshire in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside. * It was a wet day so we were inside but still productive. Thinking about the design first instead of just launching in! Only used one thick layer of paint, no underpainting. (Enjoyed the lusciousness of oils!)
