2023 Workshops
LOCATION AND DATES
The workshops will be based from studio & out in location in Newlyn in Cornwall, England, two in spring and two in early autumn.
The dates of these workshops are:
- Workshop 1 Long weekender running from Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 April for 3.5 days £350
- Workshop 2 Long weekender running from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 May for 3.5 days £350
- Workshop 3 Long weekender running from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 September for 3.5 days £350
- Workshop 4 Weekend Blitz running from Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 October for 2 days £200
CONTENT
I will be sharing my teaching knowledge and we will visit and paint as many local Cornish locations as time permits.
- We will start with a demonstration (2hours +/-) including a discussion of techniques as I paint. This will involve group interaction with questions as the painting progresses. This may be shortened from the weekend blitz workshop.
- Group morning and afternoon paints at locations close to base. These may include Newlyn Old Harbour, Marazion with St. Michael’s Mount, St. Ives, Mousehole etc. depending on course duration. During these sessions I will walk around the painters and offer help and suggestions and answer any of your questions as they arise.
- Post paint critique and discussions after painting.
- Workshop handout with notes about plein air painting, references and equipment lists plus plein air practical tools.
EXPERIENCE & CONSIDERATIONS
Please note you will need some painting experience and your own plein air painting equipment but can be a beginner at plein air painting. If you have not seen my YouTube channel you can find plenty of tips there on equipment etc. (https://www.youtube.com/@ClareBowenArtist). Parts of the workshops will be run from our home which is up 76 steps – we would hate for you to miss out if steps are not your thing!
ACCOMMODATION
We will be offering three double rooms in our home for the first who wish to book accommodation with us – costs range from £60 a night for our smallest double room (king-sized bed) to £80 a night (super-king with stunning views!). This cost includes buffet style serve yourself breakfast and non-painting partners are welcome.
Newlyn has many Airbnb rooms on offer so there should be no shortage of other available places to stay. There are also guest houses and hotels in the area if that is you preference.
EVENING MEALS
All evening meals will be arranged at local restaurants to create a social time for the group and we can talk painting! Details will be provided in the final workshop brief.
If you would like to put on the list for a particular workshop or are interested in further information as I finalise plans please let me know.
Hope to speak and paint with you soon!

Live oaks, vast marsh views and lots of low country magic are a part of the luscious backyard for our plein air painting retreat on Johns Island, SC (just 15 minutes from downtown Charleston). Retreat in the newly renovated and boho chic River Girl alongside Fallon, Founder & Director.

Painting the Low Country – ‘En Plein Air’
Workshop Content
Clare will take you through each stage of creating a plein air painting, from choosing a subject right through to completion with demonstrations and plenty of encouragement and guidance.
Some of the key areas the workshop will include: Dynamic compositions, tonal values and colour mixing, soft and hard edges, loose and fresh brush work and how to make everything relate and harmonise in your painting. Clare will also supply and demonstrate some special tips and tools which she will give out during the retreat.
There will be practical help with plein air & painting equipment. At the end of Clare’s four day retreat students will come away with a greater understanding and experience of how to approach a plein air painting from start to finish plus the next steps required for their own plein air journey. Clare delivers an informative yet relaxed retreat. She is friendly and enthusiastic and has a lot to share from her years of being an artist.
