#430 ‘Sunset Over The River Hamble’ & Perseverance

#430 ‘Sunset Over The River Hamble’ & Perseverance

by Clare Bowen | Jan 11, 2019 | Brush strokes, English seascape, Hampshire, Impressionist, Seascape, Sunset

Thank you so much to those who have emailed me and commented re my previous post. It’s really good to have feedback as it has been hard to gauge what you think of my blog! It seems like the consensus is to carry on with the format I have been...
#424 ‘Early Winter Light, Camber Docks, Portsmouth’ 30x40cm

#424 ‘Early Winter Light, Camber Docks, Portsmouth’ 30x40cm

by Clare Bowen | Dec 11, 2018 | Camber Docks, Hampshire, Marine, Old Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Seascape

First layer of burnt sienna and the all over thin layer of colour/tonal shapes was done on location and the next day I did a fat layer of lush paint! So fun to do. The big blue/black boat difficult shape as it was strong blocky, so I used thick and thin paint and...
#423 ‘First Light, Langstone Harbour’ 30x40cm

#423 ‘First Light, Langstone Harbour’ 30x40cm

by Clare Bowen | Dec 6, 2018 | Boats, Clouds, Langstone, Seascape, Sky, Sunrise

A wintery day, and lucky to have a break in the weather as it didn’t look hopeful when I arrived – solid cloud and raining! I’m pleased I didn’t drive home, waited in the car and some beautiful light and cloud formations appeared, just my sort...
#419 ‘South Parade Pier, Sand Reflections’ 20x50cm

#419 ‘South Parade Pier, Sand Reflections’ 20x50cm

by Clare Bowen | Nov 29, 2018 | Beach, dog walk, Low Tide, Portsmouth, Seascape, South Parade Pier, Southsea, Sunrise

When I arrived I was initially disappointed as there wasn’t much to the scene, the tide was still in and the sun wasn’t up so no colour, quite dull. But the tide soon went out and the colours appeared in the wet sand. Beautiful!
#409 ‘First Light, Langstone’ 12×12″

#409 ‘First Light, Langstone’ 12×12″

by Clare Bowen | Oct 30, 2018 | Boats, Hampshire, Langstone, Reflection, Sailing Boat, Seascape, Sunrise

I used a textured linen coloured board by Loxley. Not tried this type before, its quite rough and I think the subject work well with this style. Thinned the paint with Distilled Turps  – experimenting to see if it’s any better than Winsor &...

#404 ‘Dawn, Langstone Harbour’ 10×12″

by Clare Bowen | Oct 14, 2018 | Boats, Hampshire, Langstone, Low Tide, Seascape, Sunrise

I arrive early when it is still dark so I can faff with where I’m positioned & composition, board size and format. Mixing some colours and being as ready as I can be before the sun comes up!Those inky clouds where there when I arrived and...

#405 ‘Sunrise, Langstone Harbour’ 18x24cm

by Clare Bowen | Oct 14, 2018 | Boats, Hampshire, Langstone, Reflection, Seascape, Sunrise

The second painting of a morning (see previous post) A small sunrise oil sketch, very enjoyable subject, hope to go back before the boats disappear for winter!Slightly textured linen board gives a different finish. The tide was coming in so made the most of it...
#402 ‘Early Light, Bosham Channel’ 8×14″

#402 ‘Early Light, Bosham Channel’ 8×14″

by Clare Bowen | Oct 11, 2018 | Bosham, Morning, Seascape, Sunrise

An oil sketch before the tide swallowed the grasses up. I was pleased the sun direction was directly in front of me so great light on the water. Nice to paint something natural after the architecture of Venice. This area is a haven for Swans there must...
#401 ‘My Last Sunrise in Venice!’ 10×12″

#401 ‘My Last Sunrise in Venice!’ 10×12″

by Clare Bowen | Oct 8, 2018 | Italy, San Giorgio Maggiore, Seascape, Sunrise, The Grand Canal, Venice

The morning we left Venice I got up at 5am and did one more paint, and it was this.A fleeting sunrise where the sun just peeped until it went behind the cloud. I used a slightly bigger board in portrait format to capture the light and movement on the water. My...

#388 ‘Sunrise 3, San Giorgio Maggiore’ 8×10″

by Clare Bowen | Sep 22, 2018 | Family, Italy, San Giorgio Maggiore, Sea, Seascape, Sunrise, Venice

The final sunrise painting in a series of 3. I was pleased the sun was near enough to paint a portrait format with the San Giorgio next to it. I am happy with the glow I managed to get from the light of the sun, not easy! This week I have had my family staying...
#364 `Underway’ 8×10″ – Palette Knife Painting

#364 `Underway’ 8×10″ – Palette Knife Painting

by Clare Bowen | Aug 20, 2018 | Boats, Cornwall, Kingsand, Palette Knife, Sailing Boat, Sea, Seascape

This was a wonderful boat in Cornwall but sadly I didn’t have my painting gear with me – we were about to see my Aunt. So I did 4-5 sketches of it and this painting is from one of them. I’d been saving this linen covered board for years, wanting...

#363 ‘Early Morning, South Parade Pier’ 11×14″

by Clare Bowen | Aug 15, 2018 | Architecture, Beach, Blue, Buildings, Portsmouth, Seascape, Southsea

I started this a couple of weeks ago but didn’t have time to finish it en plein air so I’ve just completed in my studio. Its a familiar subject as I used to live near by, although I haven’t painted it up close before and with a radical cropping! When...

#362 ‘Sandymouth Beach 10×12″

by Clare Bowen | Aug 14, 2018 | Beach, Cornwall, Sandymouth Beach, Seascape, Sky, Summer

Last painting in Cornwall. I really enjoyed this part of the world, it helped to have amazing weather, light and skies! This is a wet sand and sky painting. I worked on the tones – the sand was surprisingly dark and the sea even darker. I tired to paint the...
#361 ‘Crackington Haven’ 11×14″

#361 ‘Crackington Haven’ 11×14″

by Clare Bowen | Aug 12, 2018 | Beach, Cliff, Cornwall, Sea, Seascape, Sky

A large imposing cliff the locals call Sleeping Dragon. A great paintable subject…with low tide and the water on the sand reflecting the cliff and sky. People to give scale and interest plus the colourful life guard flags. The sky I’d taken time to...

#360 ‘Widemouth Bay’ 20x50cm

by Clare Bowen | Aug 11, 2018 | Beach, Cliff, Clouds, Cornwall, Rocks, Sandymouth Beach, Sea, Seascape, Sky

The North Cornwall surf was so much fun to paint! Looking the other way the beach was busy with people, life guards and surfers, it looked interesting but this way attracted me more because of the colours. – Looking into the sun creates strong tonal...
